CivicAction Our Region, Our Move: Accelerating investment in our regional transportation network
The Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance has released its findings from its Forum “Our Region, Our Move.” The Forum brought together 300 delegates from government, business, academia, non-profit and labour to push for investment in The Big Move.
The delegates outlined criteria by which the investment should be made, including measures for accountability, fairness, and clear communication around the planning and implementation of projects.
The four key recommendations set out by the report include:
- Accountability and transparency are not optional
- Implement revenue tools now with five principles in mind
- Maximize social and economic benefits by collaborating with communities and stakeholders
- Build support and trust through communication that “makes it real”
The GTHA’s population is projected to grow to 9 million by 2036. CivicAction reports that in order for the region to maintain its economic prosperity, investment in an efficient, reliable and sustainable transportation system is needed. Furthermore, sustainable, dedicated funding from several revenue tools that reflect long-term and short-term thinking will ensure the plan will be isolated from economic shocks and lost-revenue over time from behaviour change.
