Funding announced for Hamilton Light Rapid Transit
May 27th, 2015 – Members of Move the GTHA released the following statement today:
Congestion in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) has reached a breaking point and, with our region growing faster than any other in North America, the need to implement Metrolinx’s The Big Move transportation plan is more urgent than ever.
That is why we welcome the Ontario Government’s announcement this week that up to $1 billion of the previously-approved $16 billion funding will support a new LRT line and extended GO Transit service in Hamilton. This announcement comes on the heels of the Hurontario-Main LRT and GO Regional Express Rail getting funding go-ahead, and the Finch LRT getting a definitive “move forward” signal. This is a great step forward for residents and businesses of Hamilton and across the region, which will enhance mobility and bring many other benefits.
We applaud the Government’s commitment to advancing transit investment in the GTHA and we look forward to seeing the government move as quickly as possible to build approved projects.
However, approved funding to support the estimated cost of fully building and operating The Big Move is still not fully in place. While great strides are being made, all sectors and the public need to continue to pursue new sources of sustainable and dedicated funding to fully implement The Big Move plan.
“This is a key piece of the regional transportation network that will help residents move more seamlessly across the GTHA,” said Sevaun Palvetzian, CEO, CivicAction. “This is a welcome and important investment for our region.”
“This latest announcement by the Province continues to provide clarity as to how the $16B investment in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area will be spent over the next 10 years and is an important step forward,” said Jan De Silva, President & CEO, Toronto Region Board of Trade. “Whether it’s an investment in Hamilton, Brampton, or Toronto, investments in transit benefit our entire region.”
“This is a great win for Hamilton residents and businesses to further build their community and create better connections in the GTHA” said Cameron MacLeod, Executive Director of CodeRedTO, “I can’t wait to see the B-Line in action.”
